10 Top Tips for Taking Your Baby to the Swimming Pool for the First Time

Are you a new mum looking to introduce your little one to the wonders of the swimming pool? Taking your baby for their first swim can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's essential to be prepared and ensure a safe and enjoyable time for both you and your baby. Here are 10 top tips to help you make the most of this special outing:

1. Choose the Right Pool

When selecting a swimming pool for your baby's first outing, opt for a facility with a designated baby or toddler pool. These pools are typically warmer and shallower, providing a more comfortable and safe environment for your little one to splash around in.

2. Plan the Timing

Pick a time of day when the pool is likely to be less crowded, such as during the morning on weekdays. This quieter environment will allow you and your baby to enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed by too many people.

3. Prep Your Baby

Before heading to the pool, ensure that your baby is well-fed, well-rested, and has had a clean nappy change. A happy and content baby is more likely to enjoy their first swimming experience.

4. Pack the Essentials

Remember to pack essentials such as swim nappies, a towel, a change of clothes, and any other items your baby may need. Being prepared will make your outing smoother and more enjoyable. Do not put a swim nappy on to travel in as they are not designed to hold wee. If you forget one, a lot of pools offer them for free or for a small charge (you don't want your baby to swim in a regular nappy as it will blow up like a massive balloon).

I recommend these items:

Wrap towel for you

Hooded or poncho towel for baby

Baby warm suit or this full suit

Neoprene changing mat (it's warmer than a regular mat)

A few toys to play with while you get ready

Take your towels to poolside with you.

5. Start Slow

When introducing your baby to the water, start slow. Hold your baby securely and gently introduce them to the water, allowing them to get comfortable at their own pace. Gradually move around and let them experience the feeling of being in the water.

6. Use Flotation Devices

Consider using a flotation device designed for babies. These can help your little one stay afloat and feel more confident in the water. Always supervise your baby closely, even when using flotation devices. I recommend this baby float. Click here.

Using this isn't in place of you, it gives you a little space as your baby gets older and more wiggly. It is also great to use for you to exercise a little by kicking along and pushing them in the float.

7. Make it Fun

Engage your baby with playful activities in the water, such as singing songs, splashing gently, or playing with floating toys. Making the experience fun and enjoyable will create positive associations with swimming for your little one.

8. Watch for Signs of Discomfort

Pay attention to your baby's cues while in the water. If they seem fussy, irritable, or tired, it may be time to take a break or end the swimming session. Your baby's comfort and safety should always come first.

9. Post-Swim Care

After your swimming session, wrap yourself up (highly recommend a wrap towel or a poncho towel) first and then wrap your baby whilst poolside. They will no doubt cry once you are out as they will be cold. This is normal so don't worry. Lie your baby on the neoprene mat to dry your baby off thoroughly, especially in the nappy area, to prevent any skin irritations. Change them into dry clothes promptly (no hooded clothing) and ensure they stay warm and cozy. Put a soft hat on for extra warmth. Then you get dressed. You may have to feed them as they will most probably be hungry and want to snuggle. Take your time in the changing rooms, it's a really lovely time afterwards.

10. Celebrate the Milestone

Finally, celebrate this special milestone with your baby! Capture memories of their first swimming experience through photos or videos and cherish the joy of sharing this moment together.
